I’m going to let you in on a little secret: I never PLANNED on starting a landscape company. In fact, mowing lawns is the ONLY JOB I’ve ever been fired from! But I was 18 at the time. People change. And now here we are.
In the dead of winter in 2021, laying on the chiropractic table in agonizing pain, I was offered my first job pulling Ivy. By my doctor. The job was a success. But my story doesn’t start there.
My story starts in the Spring of 2020, when a tree fell in my yard. It was a big tree. It was a dead tree. And it was a loud fall. I wasn’t there to hear it, but philosophical conundrums aside, I think we all know trees don’t fall silently. Fortunately that tree didn’t land on anything expensive. But it did change the trajectory of my life for the foreseeable future. It forced me to address the land I had been neglecting for decades. An expanse of Ivy and thistle where my dogs had done their business for 16 years.
I used to hate this patch of land. It was the bane of my existence. It made me wish I lived in a condo so I wouldn’t have to think about Ivy. But all that changed with Covid.

When the quarantine hit, I found myself looking for creative ways to spend my time. Summer was coming and we were all being encouraged to spend time outside. So I did!
I hired one crew to cut down problem trees and another to clear my Ivy. They did an amazing job. And it made me realize how much more there was to do.
I got inspired.
I built a fire pit.
I gathered twigs.
I cut up logs.
I built decorative and purposeful stacks of firewood.
I created a walking path.
And I did it all without purchasing any materials!

It turned out that under this blanket of literal poison (Ivy), was a treasure trove of decomposing tree trunks and branches, stumps and rocks. Nature’s gift basket!
I went to work, reorganizing it all until I had created a rustic and inviting back yard. An aesthetic, one of my later clients would lovingly call, “Summer Camp Chic.” Fast forward to my chiropractic appointment, my doctor asked me if I could help do the same for him. And The Yard Bro was born.
My intention was only to focus on simple work: like clearing brush, pulling English Ivy and raking leaves. But it wasn’t long before people were asking what to do with their land now that I’d cleared it. So I began making suggestions, and before I knew it, The Yard Bro was becoming a full-service landscaping company.
I do so much more than just remove Poison Ivy. I build dry stack walls, patios, dry creeks and staircases. I design gardens, I build fire pits. I own too many trucks, and 7 Chainsaws. I love this work, and my clients say they can see that in the beauty I leave behind.
And now I’m going to be a little too honest. I’m going to tell you that I won’t be doing this work forever. I can’t. I’m 54 years old and rocks are heavy.
